- R134a systems
What the price does not include
- R1234yf refrigerant, used by most cars built after 2017. We check against the registration which one your car takes.
- Cabin filter. It is the commonest cause of a stale smell, and we change it on request at the same visit.
- Finding and repairing a leak. The vacuum test tells you whether there is a leak, not where it is.
- Replacing the compressor, condenser or evaporator.
When this work becomes due
An air conditioning system loses about ten per cent of its refrigerant a year even when it is completely sound. Refrigerant escapes slowly through hoses and seals, and that is not a fault. It does mean that after five years the system holds roughly half of what it should.
The first sign is not that the air fails to cool. The first sign is that cooling takes longer than it used to and the difference only shows on a longer drive. By the time the air does not cool at all, the charge is so low that the compressor will not engage, and it has been low for a long time.
A stale smell is not a refrigerant fault. It comes almost always from the cabin filter or from moisture collected in the evaporator. The filter is cheap and quick to change, and it is the place to start.
Air conditioning is worth running in winter too. The system dries the air, so it clears the windscreen faster than the heater alone. It also keeps the compressor seals lubricated, which extends the life of the system.
Refrigerant work may only be carried out by a technician holding the required refrigerant qualification. That is not a recommendation but a statutory requirement, and it covers a simple recharge as well. If somewhere offers to top up your air conditioning without the qualification, the work is illegal.
If we find something else
We do not start work you do not know about. If we find something beyond what was agreed, we call and tell you what it costs and what happens if it is left undone. You decide.
A fixed price does not change without your permission. If we cannot reach you within a reasonable time, the law allows us up to 150 € of minor and necessary additional work.
